What You Need To Know

Riders should be prepared for a one-hour horseback ride through Monument Valley’s rugged terrain. This tour is suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned riders. We recommend a hat and sunscreen to shield from the sun during hot seasons. The desert can be hot and dry. During Winter, the temperture can get to 20°F to 30°F (-6°C to -1°C). So we recommend wearing multiple layers of clothing and a face mask during cold seasons. Riders should be comfortable with gentle but steady horses, and be aware that the terrain can be rocky and uneven. Weight limits may apply, so confirm in advance. Don’t forget your camera—this scenic adventure offers breathtaking photo opportunities!

  • We recommend wearing long pants, preferably jeans or riding pants.
  • Arrival Time: Must arrive 30 minutes before tour time.
  • Children under 12 years are not permitted on this tour.
  • Guests who are expecting/pregnant cannot take this tour.

Tour Itinerary

1. Meet at Starting Point

Drive or walk your way towards The View Hotel Premium Cabins and at the end of the road is a path leading to our horse stable. When you arrive at the Sacred Monument Tours Horse Stable location, you’ll meet your Navajo guide, sign a waiver and receive a safety briefing.

2. The Mittens Buttes

We’ll begin our journey with a scenic ride to The Mittens, also known as the West and East Mitten Buttes. Enjoy stunning views and learn about the geological significance of these iconic landmarks. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two gigantic mittens with their thumbs facing inwards.

3. Merrick Butte

This butte was named after a well-known 19th-century prospector, Richard Merrick, who was one of the first to explore the area. The butte, standing 5,000 feet above sea level, is often seen in iconic Western films, making it a popular stop on horseback tours. As you ride through the valley, you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a classic Western movie scene, with Merrick Butte standing proudly in the background. Its striking silhouette adds to the rugged beauty of the landscape!

4. Sentinel Mesa

It’s often referred to as the “watchtower” of the valley due to its towering presence and strategic location. Standing at 6,200 feet, it has been a natural landmark for centuries, guiding both the Navajo people and early explorers. During horseback tours, riders can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert, and the mesa’s distinct shape often evokes the image of a lone sentinel keeping watch over the land. It’s a popular stop for photography, offering stunning vistas of the iconic red rock formations.

5. End of Tour

Your tour concludes at the Sacred Monument Tours Horse Stable location where you’re free to ask your guide any remaining questions and take last minute pictures with everyone including our horses!

FAQ

What is the cancellation policy?

All tours are subject to our Terms of Service. We operate rain or shine, as long as roads are open. In case of severe weather, Sacred Monument Tours may modify or cancel tours for safety, offering a full refund if canceled. Cancellations within 48 hours are non-refundable, and the 20% deposit is non-refundable. If the park closes or a tour ends early due to weather or emergencies, we may cancel or modify the tour and issue a partial or full refund.

Is booking online recommended or required?

Although booking your tour online in advance is not required, our tours are limited and often sell out quickly throughout the year. To ensure the best availability and experience for tours and departure times, we highly recommend booking in advance.

Hours of operation and timezone?

Our horse stable location is open from 8 AM to 8 PM (GMT-7), during Spring, Summer & Fall. During the Winter months, our horse stable location stays open until 6 p.m. Our Customer Service team can assist you by phone from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Best times to experience Monument Valley?

The best times of day to experience Monument Valley are at sunrise and sunset. During these times, the soft, golden light casts dramatic shadows and brings out the rich, vibrant colors of the landscape. Sunrise typically offers a more peaceful atmosphere with fewer visitors, while sunset provides equally breathtaking views with the added beauty of the setting sun illuminating the rock formations. These times also allow for cooler temperatures, making for a more comfortable visit.

Difference between public and private tour?

A public tour invovles different parties joining together to fill up the maximum capacity, while a private tour is for you or your group, offering a more personalized experience. All our tours are public. However, you and your group can purchase all available spaces for a private, personal, or intimate experience.

More information for children?

Sacred Monument Tours will not have children under 12 years old on this tour. It is your responsibility to bring personal items. All children must be accompanied by an adult. We cannot make any exceptions for children under the required age limit.
